Marriage Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Marriage - Essay Example For instance, after marriage all the property and inheritance of the woman went to her husband and she used to be completely dependent and vulnerable to him. There were reforms that took place in the 1960s, for instance the women started being able to work and participate in the household income. Single mothers were not frowned upon and neither were spinsters. Child support was assured and property was divided equally. It was in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when major social and legal changes occurred, and therefore we will talk about this period in relation to marriage and matrimony laws and rights. Before the 20th century marriage had deep roots in religion, law as well as interdependence between men and women. Although marriage was not a platform where both men and women stood equally, they were dependent on each other. They could not live without each other without having to face problems. For instance, women needed men to get them the basic necessities to survive, while men needed women to bear and rear their children, take care of the household and family. Often a widower could be found looking for a new wife right after his former one died. This interdependence definitely did not mean equality of men and women. In fact, it was the other way round and marriage was based on patriarchal laws where, at the time of their marriage ceremony, women had to vow to always obey their husbands. The property laws stated that a wife’s â€Å"legal identity was obliterated at marriage and she was entirely under the power and control of her husband† (Chambers 3). There was no way that a married woman could have any kind of property or even have control of the salary she might be getting if allowed to work. Therefore, marriage meant â€Å"civil death† for women (Chambers 3), and they were absolutely dependent on their husbands for everything. The cruel part was that the husbands could spend their wives’ inheritance and money on anything at all, which included keeping mistresses and hiring prostitutes. It was in the late 19th century that in some parts of the world, for instance in Canada, laws were passed that allowed women to own their property as well as the personal savings or earnings they got from any work they did. However, considering that most women, especially of middle and lower class, did not have much of property these laws did not really make much difference, and the judges were reluctant to apply them anyway. In fact, it was not just the women’s property and inheritance that the husbands got control over. The men also co ntrolled their wives’ bodies after marriage. They could force them into sex or childbirth against their wishes, and the women had to oblige them. This also meant that in case there was some kind of an offence against a woman it was only her husband that could prosecute, if he wished to. Women were always at the mercy of their husbands. Apart from their money and bodies, women also did not have any right over their children. Their husbands could take their children anywhere at all and the women could not say or do anything about it. Their ownership lay with their fathers who could keep and raise them wherever they wanted, without giving any reason. In fact, they could practically do anything with them; sell them, trade them, make them work and take the money. Such was the case during the late 19th century. The early 20th century saw feminist groups rising up against this practice too like they were protesting against the property, suffrage and other rights. Birth rate started to decline due to maternal instincts. Due to this and the feminist groups’

Macbeth Essay -- essays research papers

The Shakespearian tragedy, Macbeth has been said to be one of Shakespeare’s most profound and mature visions of evil. In Macbeth we find not gloom but blackness, a man who finds himself encased in evil. Macbeth believes that his predicaments and the evils that he commits are worth everything he will have to endure. In spite of this towards the end of the play he realizes that everything he went through, was not worth the crown, or the high price he had to pay of losing his wife, and finding himself alone. Macbeth is shown as a kind and righteous man in the beginning of the play. He is the Thane of Glamis, and a brave warrior among men and is highly regarded by the king of Scotland. All these traits make Macbeth great. Conversely, several factors transform this one great man into a great tyrant and a malevolent murderer. Macbeth grows great throughout the play yet in reality becomes less and less as a man. Macbeth proves that wearing a crown and having the power does not fulfi ll all of one’s dreams and fantasies. Being the king does not necessarily make the man. In the first act we meet the witches and the mood of Macbeth is set-dark, gloomy, evil, supernatural- a perfect atmosphere to accompany the tragic hero. When Macbeth first meets the witches he is at the height of his moral ascendancy. He is Thane of Glamis and he just slaughtered a traitor from the Netherlands in the name of Scotland. However, Macbeth’s curiosity begins to stir when these three witches tell him of his fate. â€Å"All hail Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis! All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth! That shalt be king hereafter!† (Act 1, Sc.3 48-50) Macbeth is already the Thane of Glamis and the audience knows that King Duncan named him Thane of Cawdor. However, the last two prophecies could not make sense to Macbeth, and what they reveal to Banquo is even more puzzling. â€Å"Thou shall get kings, though thou, be none.† (Act 1, Sc.3 67) A curious Macbeth yearns to know more when the witches suddenly vanish. A moment later, the prophecies prove to be true. â€Å"And, for earnest of a greater honour, He bade me, From him, call thee Thane of Cawdor: In which addition, Hail! Most worthy Thane, for it is thine!† (Act 1, Sc.3 104-107) Macbeth wants to test the truth by asking Banquo if he also believes that the rest of the prophecies could be true. Banquo is suspicio... ...m; And let the angel whom thou still Hast served tell thee, Macduff was from his mother’s womb Untimely ripped.† (Act 5 Sc. 8 13-16) Alone, confused, frustrated and shamed Macbeth dies a warrior by the sword of the worthy Macduff. In the fatal end Macbeth was called upon to pay the price for all his wrong doings. Macbeth could have been a great man. Macbeth was Thane of Cawdor and Glamis and most importantly respected by the King. Macbeth had a loving wife and a dear friend in Banquo and all this he yearned for, when he realized little to late he had it already. Had it not been for his belief in his own charmed existence and his belief in supernatural prophecies, if he had listened to Banquo’s warning, he would have never risked everything he loved, everything he had, and his own life for that crown. If Macbeth did not have so much pride in his own ambition he would have been a happy and respected man. â€Å"I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself and falls on the other.† (Act 1 Sc. 7 25-30) Macbeth spoke these words in the beginning of the play and it was still to early in time, for him to realize how true that really was.

When a student is tardy, they negatively impact their teachers and other students. Teachers are often required to allow tardy students to make up work, which often requires them to restructure their lessons or reteach missed materials. Student’s tardiness doesn’t just affect the people around them, but also in our nation. They contribute to the growing number of tardy students which greatly affect the status of our educational nature and nation. There is also that side of being tardy that must be solved directly- bullying, either they are the ones to bully or the one being bullied. Due to this reason and peer pressure, they intend to break rules either they may get this manner when they witness their parent’s fight or the worse is having a broken family. Based on the location of the University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue, those who live in Lapu-Lapu City will have some problems because of the heavy traffic everyday due to the intersections, while on the side of Mandaue City, expect no traffic. In the front of the school, the road is not blocked by the cars dropping the students because there is enough space at the back of the campus for parking. Tardiness does not only focus on being late in coming to school but also in passing projects or assignments. This topic is not new anymore, even for the star sections in every school, they still encounter this kind of problem. There are many reasons for this problem, but the most common is having a hectic schedule which maybe because of many projects, hard projects or simply being lazy. The greatest impact of being tardy in a student is depression and loss of interest in coming to school. That is why they don’t mind anymore about being late on which they are kicked out. When they are already out of school, they will just sit there and wait for their parents to give them money for food, which is not right. Once tardiness becomes one of your personality, you will be used to it until you go to work. With this attitude, you will be having difficulty in finding jobs which may cause you to be a beggar in the street. The core composition of this research is determining the main reason for students being tardy in school and what we can do in order to lessen the number of this case. The researchers got this idea from everyday experience, especially after flag ceremony on which many students are late. This study was created in order to help tardy students stop this attitude so that they will not cause bigger problem to themselves, the nation, and to the near future. After this study, the investigator will be able to determine the main cause of this problem and know what behavior, manner or tips should be taken up by students to lessen the case of tardy students. The researcher would also be able to know the main effect of this problem and how to avoid this habit by organizing a survey and more research.

Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "A Journey Of Odysseus" essay for you Create order In an Analysis of The Odyssey, we follow the unchronological/multiperspective following the return of Odysseus to his homeland of Ithaca, where he will defeat inhospitable suitors camped in his palace and reunite with his loyal wife, Penelope. As we analyze the Odysseus, we come to realize that the story is a showcase of a form of a rebirth of the mind and body. Before diving into the breakdown and character analysis of Odysseus, we must dive into the understanding of Greek culture and mythology so that we may begin to understand the mindset and reasoning behind specific choices between the characters. In Greek culture and society, their belief system and ideology followed them into every aspect into every form of their daily life. In Greek culture and society, it was ones duty to constantly find ways to advance and enhance oneself mentally and physically. When men were not training in the military or conversing in political discussions or debates; they often went to the theatre for entertainment. It was very common for men to watch a wide variety of themes, ranging from dramas, tragedies, and comedies. These often involved the portrayal of current politics and gods-like elements in some form. Now that weve allowed ourselves to formulate an understanding of Greek ideology, we can understand and focus on Odysseus and his journey to return home to Ithaca; folljourneyowing the twists and turns that will continuously set him back. As a man and legend, Odysseus is known as the man who defeated the Trojan War with his mind alone. Develop the image of a man who meticulous and sagacious, an individual who values knowledge above all else and views his mind as his muscle and means to advance against others. Odysseus is one of the most influential Greek champions during the Trojan War. When regarding Odysseus, he is frequently viewed as a man of means, a voice of reason, renowned for his self-restraint and diplomatic skills. He not only is Odysseus considered to be ingenious due to his concept of the Trojan Horse, but he is regarded as an eloquent speaker, a skill that perhaps is best demonstrated in the embassy to Achilles in book 9 of the Iliad. Where the two are often opposed in p ractice since they have many duels and run-ins. The book picks up on the events that take place shortly after the Trojan War, where Odysseus earns the wrath of the gods due to forgetting to leave offerings/blessings to the Gods in order to seek safe passage on his return to Ithaca. Odysseus is stranded on the remote island called Ogygia with a goddess named Calypso, who has fallen in love with him and refuses to let him leave. He remains with Calypso on the island for eight years trapped in an erotic affair, where we gradually reduce himself to a mere slab of meat. At this moment we can no longer recognize the man that was previously described as ingenious and meticulous; he is reduced to basic animalistic instinct. We can ask ourselves how he came to be in this position and the answer isnt far behind. When the gods finally decide that Odysseus may return home to Ithaca, he is alone; his crew and the other boats in his force all laid destroyed from his journeys. And despite Calypsos displeasure and unwillingness to let Odysseus go ; she helps him build a new boat and stocks it with provisions from her island, allowing him to leave. Despite being allowed to leave, once he sets foot off the Island; Poseidon stirs up a storm, which nearly drowns Odysseus. Odysseus prays is was spare his life, and his body finds itself safely washed ashore on yet another island. Odysseus wakes in the forest and encounters Phaeacian princess Nausicaa. At this moment he is naked and bare, and this is the moment where he must humbly yet witty pleads for their assistance, and never reveal his identity. Its a very significant moment due to the fact that this is the first time in a very long time that Odysseus must his true muscle, his mind. For the past several years hes been using his physical muscle to fulfill the willful sexcapades of a lustful goddess Calypso, not having to put much effort into any form of thought. Not only did Odysseus have to find a way to beseech princess Nausicaa, but he also had to use his mind to meticulously plan out how he would address and approach her in a manner in which was befitting her station. As weve previously explained, Odysseus is a very calculated and meticulous individual; and this moment is where he beings to truly showcase and shine that skill set that he has been unable for so long. In Odysseus former glory, he was very cunning and deliberative. When faced with Nausicaa, the weight of every decision pains him; he becomes undecided and torn between whether to try landing against the rocky coast of Scheria; whether to rest by the river or in the shelter of the woods; or whether to embrace Nausicaas knees (the customary gesture of supplication) or address her from afar. The measure and calculation of approach showcase that these instances demonstrate balances Odysseuss warrior mentality. Despite his aggressive and determined viewpoints, he is far from irrational. Instead, the characteristics he begins to demonstrate can be seen as shrewd, cautious, and extremely self-confident. In order to gain further aid to return to his homeland, Odysseus must conduct himself as a man. Something that he had forgotten to do while he was with Calypso. After he manages to disguise himself with appropriate attire; Princess Nausicaa and Odysseus venture inland. As soon as he sees the queen, he throws himself at her feet ( As is the custom, when an individual requires help; they must throw themselves at the feet of the lady of the household). At first, the king almost mistakes Odysseus for a god, due to the nature that they had received him without revealing his identity, Odysseus puts the kings suspicions to rest by declaring that he is a mere mortal. The irony in this and that Odysseus impresses the King so much that he then offers Odysseus his daughters hand in marriage. As Odysseus reminisces on the journey that led him to the point where he was at, sitting before the King, Queen, and court of Phaeacian. Odysseus retells the stories of his adventures and journey; conveniently leaving out specific details that showcased his poor judgment and downfall of his most precious muscle; that being his mind. In one of his stories that take place shortly after the Trojan war, he recalls how his men advise him to snatch some of the food and hurry off, but, to his and his crews detriment, he decides to linger. The caves inhabitant soon returns and it is revealed to be the Cyclops Polyphemus, the son of Poseidon. In this retelling we see how Odysseus begins to lose himself after cleverly tricking and blinding Polyphemus; he decides to without his name which protects him from Poseidons wrath. Despite having secured himself a safe way to escape, out of Odysseus own hubris and the begin of his own downfall; he unnecessarily begins taunting Polyphemus which results i n him mistakenly giving his name. After Odysseuss eventual revelation of his identity to Polyphemus; an avoidable error in judgment proves to be beyond foolish, and showcases a lack of foresight. A clear contrast to the cunning prudence that Odysseus had displayed moments prior when executing his plan to escape from the cave.
